Treatment of Osgood Schlatter’s and Jumper’s knee with Shockwave Therapy

Osgood Schlatter’s is a painful knee condition which typically appears during adolescence. The child may complain of pain and swelling just below the knee cap, which is made worse with physical activity.

This condition presents when the patellar tendon pulls on the tibial tuberosity (shin bone), causing pain and inflammation. The patient may also complain of tight quads and hamstrings. A swollen bump may also appear below the knee cap.

Sometimes referred to as “Jumper’s Knee”, this condition typically affects those between the ages of 11-15, especially when they are going through a growth spurt. Boys are more affected than girls at a ratio of 3:1. 20-30% of cases are bilateral. Although Osgood Schlatter’s typically resolves with age, there are many adults who continue to experience pain.

Sports which involve heavy impact or jumping such as basketball, volleyball, gymnastics or running can often irritate symptoms.

Treatment for Osgood Schlatter’s involves:

  • temporary modification of activities which create symptoms
  • stretching the quads and hamstrings
  • ice
  • nsaids

physiotherapy

Shockwave therapy has shown to be extremely effective in the treatment of Osgood Schlatter’s disease. A low energy and low frequency treatment once ever 7-10 days seems most effective in treating this condition. On average, we see resolution in 4 treatment sessions.
