What is Neurofunctional Acupuncture?

Neurofunctional Acupuncture is an evidence based approach to acupuncture which targets the musculoskeletal and nervous system. Based out of McMaster University in Hamilton, this approach provides immediate increase in strength and range of motion while decreasing pain. After doing an assessment, needles are used to target dysfunctional nerves or muscles.

Neurofunctional acupuncture is relatively painless and uses landmarks of the musculoskeletal system rather than meridians. Thin, single use needles are inserted to stimulate nerve function. This technique is often combined with electro acupuncture, where small electrical currents are applied to the needles, further enhancing the effects and circulation of the acupuncture treatment.

Neurofunctional acupuncture can be used to treat many conditions. Some of the most common conditions treated with Neurofunctional acupuncture include:

  1. Tennis elbow/golfers elbow
  2. Piriformis syndrome
  3. Patellofemoral syndrome
  4. Bursitis
  5. Lower back pain
  6. Arthritis
  7. Neck pain
  8. Headaches
