Whiplash and Motor Vehicle Accidents

Whiplash and Motor Vehicle Accidents

Whiplash is the result of rapid acceleration and deceleration of the neck. This is most common with motor vehicle accidents, but can also happen in sports injuries. Symptoms can include limited mobility and stiffness in the cervical and thoracic spine, along with pain and headaches. Symptoms of whiplash can also include numbness and tingling in the arms or hands. In some instances, whiplash can cause concussion. Symptoms of whiplash do not always express themselves immediately. It is not uncommon for pain and stiffness to appear several hours to several days after a motor vehicle accident. The symptoms will typically last 8-12 weeks, however treatment can help to lessen the duration and severity of the symptoms.
